A Hidden Gem in Rural Iwanuma: SOBADOKORO YUU

A short drive north of Kanahebisui Shrine and Hanatopia Iwanuma, along narrow roads in Iwanuma, Miyagi Prefecture, a traditional Japanese house suddenly comes into view. This is SOBADOKORO YUU, the soba restaurant I visited.

I came for the juwari soba—noodles made entirely from buckwheat flour, limited to just five servings a day. I arrived around 12:30 p.m., an hour and a half after opening, and worried that it might already be sold out. Thankfully, the restaurant mainly serves nihachi soba, made with 80% buckwheat flour and 20% wheat flour, so the juwari was still available. What a relief.

The nihachi soba comes with up to three free refills. The juwari does not, but when my plate arrived, I understood why. Thick noodles were piled into an impressive mound that looked easily large enough for two and a half people.

I started with a bite without dipping sauce. Reminiscent of rustic, country-style soba, the thick noodles had been thoroughly chilled in cold water and had a wonderfully firm, springy bite. With every chew, the buckwheat flavor deepened, its rich aroma filling my mouth and rising through my nose.

The texture surprised me at first. Yet despite being made entirely from buckwheat, the noodles were neither crumbly nor prone to breaking apart. They had a satisfying chew and a smooth mouthfeel that made me want to slow down and savor every bite. Truly delicious.

Juwari soba sometimes comes in portions that leave you wishing for a little more, but that was certainly not a concern here. There was plenty to enjoy, and the accompanying pickles and dessert were delicious too, making the meal all the more satisfying.

At the end of that narrow road was a plate of soba I will remember for its aroma, texture, and sheer generosity. This is a restaurant that leaves both heart and stomach full—and one I would gladly visit again.
